TGA/VMI Reactor

  • The TGA/VMI reactor is a custom modified thermogravimetric analyzer (Perkin-Elmer TGS-2). It was modified to provide high magnification images of the reacting samples in the TGA pan.

  • The video microscopy capabilities of the TGA/VMI have been effective in ignition detection and characterization. The set-up has allowed us to visualize light emissions from igniting individual particles during runs with multiple particle samples. In addition, images of igniting particles can provide information on the ignition mechanism.

  • Combination of the video microscopy capabilities of the TGA/VMI with the reactivity data obtained through weight loss measurements optimizes the detection of particle ignitions.
